The National Electricity Market (NEM) spans five states across eastern and southern Australia—Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania—forming the world’s longest interconnected power system. Electricity in the NEM is traded through a real-time spot market, where generators submit energy offers every five minutes and retailers bid based on their expected demand. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) manages this process to continuously balance supply and demand.
